Waltonia cup ride report

Super Thorpe.

A total of 49 riders turned up for the Falcons last trial of the year on Boxing day. It had rained earlier in the week, making conditions sticky, but not to bad. The day itself was a crisp cold, dry morning and with all the observer boards snapped up by 9.45 am, it was off to a brisk start at 10.0am for the riders.

The hard route was a one horse race in reality, the on form Richard Timperley just having two daft dabs on section 5, where nearest rival Rob Bunting had a soft 5 and a couple of dabs, to erase himself from the top spot.

The clubman route was totally dominated by one man..Dave thorpe, on form and riding in his favourite conditions at Norwood, with a 5 on section five, the deep, muddy gully climbing out on to the bankings, observed by a Jepson/Kent trio. Giving the rest of the route at least twenty years. Dave put on a riding lesson for all his competitors, with nearest rival Mark Timperley getting tactics for the day slightly wrong, costing him a total of 13 marks lost, so all the clubmen/over 40's have got to get their act together, because the old master showed he aint done yet.

Best youth performances on the route were taken by the Bown family, with Jess taking the youth A, and Matt grabbing the Youth B, once again section 5 the mark taker.

The easy route was won by another Sheff. & hallamshire interloper, Andy Atkinson (doing a Harry Hill impersonation to the amusement of his mates!!) with clerk of the course Col Bowers senior getting runner up on his first ride on this route.
After the trial it was everyone back to the Carnavon Arms, where the awards for the trial, and annual awards were presented to the riders amidst seasonal revelry!!. The Leigh Jepson Memorial trial trophies were presented to the respective winners by Leigh's parents, Andy and Carol Jepson, and the East Midland center team championship trophies were also presented to the riders who represented the Falcons on the day.

Leigh Jepson memorial trial - ride report

A Tale of 2 Chris's

A strong entry of 60 riders turned out today to support the Sutton Falcons annual remembrance of the former trials rider, Leigh Jepson.
A cold, misty morning greeted riders and observers to the Derbyshire hills, where the course plotting team had set 8 sections out in the stream, and 2 on the hillside, section 1 being a graded hill, a rare beast in a trial nowdays!

The hard route was a test of concentration with local experts Boam, Pearson and Timperley along with A class contender Corey Dubek all wanting to get thier hands on the silverware. The mindmaster turned out to be Chris Pearson, who held his nerve, when the night owl Timperley and young Dubek both had daft dabs spoiling thier score sheets, while Mick Boam had a disastrous 5 on section 10, removing himself instantly from the podium.

The clubman route turned out to be a clash of the veteran titans, top 7 places going to 0/40's legends, split apart by Leigh's brother Paul on the trusty TY yam, a sight to be beheld on full chat in 4th gear on the muddy graded hill. Local veteran Chris Milner showed them all the way home for the win , with just 1 dab on section 3 spoiling a clean sheet. Paul Jepson was hot on his heels for the Jepson Trophy, in second place with 2 dabs. The old boss, Dave Thorpe claiming a close third with the usual Thorpe steady ride, suffering an unfortunate 3 on section 3, claimed the last award of the route.

The easy route had a good entry, with a good mix of novices and some very senior 0/40's !!, Steven Sulley taking his 1st Falcons trophy with a couple of 2's and 3's, just pipping Sheffield and Hallamshire boss Andy Atkinson to the win, with the evergreen Kurt Hobson having a fine day out on the Triumph cub, losing out on the 0/40 award by 1 mark

Hard route: Winner Chris Pearson Sherco 0
Clubman: Winner Chris Milner Gasgas 1
1st class Paul Jepson TY Yam 2
2nd class David Thorpe gasgas 4
Easy: Winner Steven Sulley Beta 10
0/40 Andy Atkinson Gasgas 13

Thanks gentlemen, and merry christmas!!

Rosebowl ride report

Levetts the cleanest of them all!

A cold, bleak autumn morning at Ashover Derbyshire, greeted riders from Cornwall to Yorkshire for the penultimate round of the ACU/Normandale Traditional trials series, hosted by Sutton Falcons .

All 20 sections were manned and ready as the riders left for a two lap tour of some of Derbyshires finest scenery and trials venues, with a variety of sections including rocks, climbs, streams and banks. Some of the riders were determined they wern't taking any Derbyshire mud home with them on their boots!

Carl Batty was in an (A) class of his own, dropping just two marks for two laps, both at Stonedge quarry, with nearest rival, local trials ace Dave Thorpe trailing by a further 20 marks. Two unfortunate 5's again, both at stonedge spoiling Daves day.

Kev Nolan had a good day, dropping just one mark on the last group of the lap to win the B class entry, Pete Ruscoe, taking the C class win on his trusty air cooled gasser had a bad first lap, and rode like a demon to keep his feet up on the second lap, until lady luck deserted him on section 17, where a 5 bumped his score up to 12. There was no worry as nearest rival Chris Berry had got his dabbing boots on, finishing on 34.

Ride of the day came from Simon Levett in the D class, proving feet welded to the footrests pays off occasionally and today was that day with a tally of 0, followed by Mark Reason on just 3, who must be kicking himself with just odd dabs!

In the E class, Neil Gaunt was also on a mission with just 2 dropped for the day, little lapses of concentration spoiling his scorecard with two odd dabs. Local ex East Midland champion Johnny Walker proving he still has the knack, also dropping 2, giving Neil a run for his money - the result going to furthest cleans to decide.

The F class was taken by Allen Collier on 9 for the day.

The guest hard route was a close run battle, with the on form Rich Timperley dropping little marks all over to finish on 16, just beating the returning to form Dan Farrer, who had an unfortunate 5 at Stonedge on a big rock step, costing him the win.

Another of the Timperley clan took some silverware home, brother Mathew just nicking the clubman route win from southerner Josh Quigg, who was nursing a damaged hand, with a tired out dad in tow!
The net result of the day was that all the riders to a man expressed their enjoyment of the trial - enough said!

A Class winner C Batty 2
B class winner Kev Nolan 1
C class winner Pete Ruscoe 12
D class winner Simon Levett 0
E class winner Neil Gaunt 2
F class winer Allen collier 9
Hard route Richard Timperley 12
Clubman Mathew timperley 8

The Sutton falcons course plotting team have been out and about in the Derbyshire hills for two weekends now, planning sections for the Falcons round of the ACU Normandale traditional trial series.

Trials secretary Steve Shaw says that over the last few years the entrants and stewards have said that the trial has been spot on, but not resting on their laurels, the team are revamping old sections and inventing new ones.

Suprisingly, despite the dry weather for recent months, all the stream sections have running white water, so expect some Scottish type sections!

Also, a new find is a graded hill, used in a club trial last year, providing entertainment for the observer and riders alike. All the sections are sensible, well thought out and tested - nothing dangerous.

As usual, if there are any willing observers out there, it would ease the pressure, and we could put an extra couple of sections in. Get your entries in sharp for the best ride round and variety of sections a club can offer these days. Steve Shaw, 01623 512173

Thankyou gentlemen - Steve.

Victory trial cancelled (10 JULY)

Regretably a decision has been made to cancel the Victory trial on 10 July due to organising members and officials holidays.

Webmasters note
These cancellations are unavoidable when the same small number of people are involved organising events all the time. In essence, there is no one else to share the burdon. If you value ‘your’ club and trials events in this area, please make an effort to support the Sutton Falcons. Come along to a monthly meeting and get involved in helping out at an event once in a while.
